The Bride of the Water God chapter 76
The Bride of the Water God chapter 76 (하백의 신부 제76회) appeared in the October 1, 2009 issue of Wink Magazine. Spoilers follow in this summary. If you don’t want to know, don’t read. Also in this issue were the color pages which normally get bundled into the volumes.
As the preview showed, Soah-in-ghost-form is wondering what could have possibly happened. This is still in the “past” and in water country and at the end of the last chapter, Nakbin is shown lying dead on the floor and flames are everywhere. Hooye is telling child-form-Habaek-with-long-hair-and-now-huge-clothes that it’s dangerous there and they must leave immediately. Habaek knocks Hooye’s hand out of the way and is asking why he’s being like that. Hooye asks Habaek if he still doesn’t know — that Nakbin had orders from the emperor to kill him and that was her reason from the start for associating with him. Habaek says, “I’ve known.” And then he says to the lifeless Nakbin, “You had but to ask and I would have given you — my life and anything else. This curse was unnecessary… you only had to ask me to die…” There’s a flashback now (..within this reliving of the past..yes, I know..) to just before that scene. Nakbin is embracing a child-Habaek-with-long-hair-and-huge-clothes. She says, “Shall I tell you a secret, Habaek?” She continues, saying the spell she has placed on him is to make him weak during the day. So that way he would be of no use to the god of the sun, Yeom Jae, in the war that’s going on. And that way he’d be of no interest to the emperor. And that she’s tired of it all: of being used like this because of him. And so that is why…. (the bubble tails off and in the next panel shows her holding a knife with her left hand, cupping his face with her right hand, but the knife point is pointing ..sort of.. towards her but not really at her torso. It is hard to explain in writing, sorry. The bubble in this panel says, “Good bye.” On the next page is a panel of fire and that flashback-within-these-memories-of-the-past has ended because he is cradling her bloodied body. He tells Hooye he will not be going and tells Hooye for him to go alone. Hooye yells that he can’t do that: in his weakened state, even he(Habaek) would perish in the flames. Hooye then asks him, “Do you know what I have abandoned/thrown away because of you? My sister who allied herself with the emperor to save my life…. I cannot simply leave you, whom she gave up her life for, to die like this!” They are interrupted with the appearance of Tae-eul-jin-in. He says, “This is quite the tear-jerker.” Hooye at this point does not know who Tae-eul-jin-in is and yells, “And who are you?!” Tae-eul-jin-in simply say she’s the one who told Nakbin how to place the curse on Habaek. And also he came to say how to undo the curse. Soah-in-spirit-form hears this and thinks to herself, “There’s a way to undo the curse? Habaek can be free from the curse?” And Hooye says, “And just how would that work?” Tae-eul-jin-in says there is only one condition for undoing the curse: and that is the one who placed the curse has to be the one who undoes it. Hooye says, “What kind of nonsense is that! She already died! So what you are basically saying is it’s impossible!” Tae-eul-jin-in says, “And isn’t half of her human? When gods die, their bodies and spirits are taken to [the Heavens..whatever..], but humans are different from gods: they are repeatedly reborn. Habaek’s bride will be reborn amongst the humans later. And that reincarnated woman will come back some time in the future to water country. And if that happens, Habaek can meet the one he loved again and be released from the curse. In response to this, Soah-in-spirit-form is holding her spirit hands over her mouth, again, since she’s shocked at this revelation. That is, she thinks, “So, was the reason for the annual offering of a bride to Habaek was to wait for the rebirth of Nakbin? It’s an event that could take however many hundreds or thousands of years… yet, just for the sake of one person, [in that manner] ….” Then spirit-Soah looks at her spirit-hands and notices she’s fading. She’s wondering if her time there is coming to an end. She is highly displeased with that possibility (obviously) and says she still hasn’t found out how to release Habaek from the curse yet! Her last bubble says, “I don’t want to go! I can’t go! Not like this-!!” End of chapter.
As a side note: I think the author is losing track of details in her story. Nakbin had placed the curse on him before her death so she did see him in his child form before she died. Yet, when Nakbin sees him at the imperial palace (after Soah gets whisked away to the lunar palace but before she sees the past), she says she had always been wondering how he looked like as a child. So, that’s one inconsistency. *shrug*
Sure, thanks.
Hello from Russia!
Can I quote a post in your blog with the link to you?
after reading this summary, i think of kikyo and kagome from inuyasha. my guess is soah is gonna turn out to be the human rebirth form of Nakbin. as for the god side of nakbin, Tae-eul-jin-in might have brought her spirit from heaven and stored it into another body. that would explain why nakbin was looking into the water at her own body that is still in heaven.
As always, thank you for the spoilers! It makes my day to get updates like these
As far as how things are going, I’m starting to think that Soah knowing his actual names is going to have something to do with the curse. Granted, I’ll in no way be happy if she is, in fact, the reincarnation of Nakbin–who I think is abhorrently one-dimensional and about as interesting as a box of rocks.
In the case of Nakbin being instructed to originally kill Haebak, it’s a clear of the the Snow White Syndrome–killer with intent suddenly finds good/innocence in their target and somehow attempts to save them before letting them go–though I have my doubts that she actually loved him. By the way she says it (and her reanimated corpse has been acting) she was more fed-up with being used than actually falling for Haebak…which is sad in my opinion…and why I’m glad the wh*re is dead.
All of that is over-laid with the Emperor’s intent and the war he’s trying to win. My guess is the author wasn’t exactly sure where she wanted this story to go when she started. With how random some characters appear and are used, it seems she’s still figuring things out. Rather than lose track of details (which yes, as an author I can honestly say this happens a lot) some of what she writes/draws is just to move the story along and may not actually have deeper meaning. Now that she is getting her plot together and whatnot, things are moving along a lot quicker, which is nice.
Until next time!
Thank you so much for the summary!
That cleared up a lot of things for me…
I agree with cereus_lily, Soah can’t be Nakbin, because she’s fully human now
and… wow…
“…he’d be of no interest to the emperor. And that she’s tired of it all: of being used like this because of him…”
I think that this actually makes Nakbin looks good as a person/human….
I wonder how (in the present) Habaek feels towards Nakbin (both the dead one and the reincarnated one), I mean, right now, Habaeks seems to be as much in love with Soah as he did back then with Nakbin….
Thx comicseoul very much for this summary!!! ^_^
I feel like there is going to be a lot of misunderstandings in the next couple chapters. ;( I have a feeling that Soah will misunderstand about her being a reincarnation of Nakbin. But the story becomes really interesting.
Recap: In chapter 74, Tae-eul-jin-in said to Nakbin, “How do you feel looking upon that dead body of yours?” And this chapter 76 reveals that Nakbin can reincarnate because only her “god” side died and her human side can reborn. So her human side is reborn as the same Nakbin, but now she is full human. Therefor, I think Soah cannot be Nakbin’s reincarnation. (That’s what I hope or else =(
Thank you for the summary!!!! I really like this one
thank you i love botwg!!
Thank you !!!
I would be so pissed if Soah is Nakbin’s incarnation. I want Soah to be just Soah. Thank you again for your spoiler. So now what? Soah gets to to the Moon country, Habaek doesn’t want to leave the Emperor place. We all have to wait about 3 more vols to know what their decisions are.
Thanks for the summaries. ^_^
Yeah, you’re right about the inconsistencies.
There were other ones too, like when Habaek first met Mura. In chapter 12, he has long hair (like when he was married to Nakbin) and she’s wearing her hair in braids (like when she met Bi Ryeom). But later on, in the flashbacks to how Habaek met Nakbin, Habaek and Mura already know one another, but Mura’s hair is in braids and Habaek’s hair is mid-length. And still later, when Mura adopts her current hairstyle, Habaek’s hair is still mid-length and he’s still not married to Nakbin.
Thank You!!!! This chapter is great!
Habaek sounded really broken hearted in this chapter.
It better not come out to Soah being her human side..Ima be mad cause then theres gonna be the whole you love me cause im her reincarnation thing….Well either way thanks a lot!
And now to the thank you-s!
Thank you very much for always posting these amazing summaries!
*hugs&kiss* comicseoul.
Thank you for taking much of your FREE time to post them.
And since I’m a generous *rolling eyes* person…. umm… I’ll give you Mui as a present. I’ll keep Bi Ryeom.
May he be the best present ever hihi.
Kamsamida! Kisses!
about the inconsistency…
in on of the earlier volumes… there’s a flash back (again hehe) to when Habaek was married to Nakbin – in their good ol’ days.
And she says to him…’I've always wondered how you looked as a child.’ This of course – she was trying to lure him into giving his name or smth.
So it was said before her murder and – the fact that she saw him then when she put the spell…She couldn’t take a very good look at him could she now? Since HooYe came to the rescue and slashed poor *rooling eyes* Nakbin.
So what I’m trying to say -very poorly – is that she kept on saying that before and after the curse… maybe it became a personal curiosity…who knows…
Thank you for the summary!!
